#1- In episode 4 of “Ways of seeing” Berger states “publicity proposes to us that we could change our own lives by buying something more”. What he means by this is that by seeing these ads it shows what you can have if you buy it. These advertisements are there to persuade us into getting the things we don’t neccesarily need making your lifestyle more desirable to others. It is significant to the advertisor because it sucks us in as consumers to believe these ads would make a difference in our lives such as better skin or high fashion clothing and that causes us to spend the money.

#2- The difference  between oil paintings and publicity are that with oil paintings it shows what they already own  “you get a sense of their value” whereas publicity makes us feel unsatisfied with what we have making us want more “it appeals to the way of life we aspire to”. It’s an illusion to a happier life, we will never be satisfied as long as these ads are around because we tend to want to be better than others and are easily influenced because of the images it portrays.

#3- The dream of a far away place is a perfect example of the effect advertising has on me. As I watch T.V. or scroll through social media I tend to see commercials or ads of these amazing places that I would love to visit. These ads are talking about the experiences and the great time one would have if they traveled there. It shows people on beaches relaxing and enjoying themselves which makes me believe if I go there I would be as relaxed or at peace as they are.

1.  As Berger states in episode 4 of “Ways of seeing”, publicity proposes to us that we could change our own lives by buying something more. He compares the publicity in today’s society with the oil paintings back in the days. Images through advertisements connected with our own  lives as they are influence us to buy more things in order to be desirable and pleasant improving our own lifestyle.

2. According to Berger, there are two differences between publicity and oil paintings. The first one and more important,in my opinion, is that the oil paintings used to refer to the moment where they made, while the publicity nowadays refers to a imaginary future enhanced by the products. The second ,but not least difference , is that ,on one hand ,paintings were surrounded by a gold frame which showed the wealth of the possessor within and around the picture ,on the other hand, publicity surrounds by us as we are and behind those images are covered our wishes which falsely believe within this way we ‘ll change our own lives.

3. Advertising works upon fear ,the fear of us not being desirable. People who advertise things have the ability to manipulate us influencing our emotions. A good example of manipulation as Berger claims in episode 4 , is buying perfumes appealing our desire for pleasure and try to make us buy those even though that we don’t really need them. Our minds  engaged with ads ,unconsciously , whose create unrealistic expectations of perfection. In conclusion, advertisements are based, falsely, in the relationship between products and our own lifestyle.

  1. Advertising not only promotes social messages but also lifestyle through illustrating an unreal better position of ideal consumer and creating better expectations of a product to impress the minds of the consumers.
It’s significant in a bad way because the influence of advertising is a power to alter what consumers think and feel. It’s a manipulation and exaggeration of the quality of the product that tent people to consume it even if they are unnecessary.
  2. When you try to put differences between these two aspects. Think about the facts of oil paintings. As Berger explained in the video, it shows us the current owner’s life and his wealth without including any detail of how they get all those things. On the other hand, publicity shows us a perfect unreal life that we want to have and they want us to have in order to get unnecessary things by purchasing their products.
  3. The dream of a faraway place.
When I was a child I used to travel often because my mom worked in a business company next to a prestige travel agency. Every time I went to my mom’s job I told her where was going to be the next place to visit. Now I realized that I didn’t care about how much was going to be the cost for those travels, food, etc. I just wanted to be there where the image outside of the agency was. Same peace, same sunny day, same beach because that’s how publicity has a big role in this life. I love visiting other places, and, when I see in those advertisements of people looking so peaceful and happy brings me a good vibe and a way to think that I can solve any problem by going anywhere.

Blog Post #3 – Ways of Seeing Episode 4

  1. Ads tricks our mind into believing in a product by exaggerating its’ quality. It misleads the consumer into thinking that there are things that are missing in our lives and the creativity of it is very appealing to its’ target audience. It’s very significant because it influences a potential customer’s buying decision.
  2. The differences are quite staggering. The oil painting merely shows a sense of contentment and appreciation of what we already possess whereas the publicity photos can give us the wrong impression that we can’t just be satisfied on what we already have. They reveal that advertisements fuels our desire to spend our hard-earned money on unnecessary material things. Consumerism at its’ best and definitely drives economic growth.
  3.  Let’s picture a massive BURGER FAST FOOD shiny banner sprawled on the side of a highway. You needed to stop for gas – the images of this juicy burger makes your mouth water and immediately you give in to your desire and YOU fell for it! It just goes to show that the advertisers did a great job in manipulating the photos making it look more appealing to us. That’s how they get us!

Ladies are still externalized in the same way that Berger described them today.
They’re frequently seen as sources of happiness and contentment.
Ladies advance average body guidelines through virtual entertainment, similar to what the lady in the movie indicates, that bare artworks exhibit an unrecognizable and misrepresented body for the enjoyment of men and are not retable to most ladies overall.
In these paintings, women are represented as accommodating to men and allowing them to assert their authority.

In comparison to women in European paintings, women in virtual entertainment have greater control over their images since they may choose what they want to reveal.
Regardless, ladies will be influenced by a man’s appearance because it is assumed that a lady should act with dignity.

Social media plays a vital role in many individuals in the current generation. People post about their lifestyles, friends, family, etc. A person’s life can also change overnight because it went viral. Even though we live in the 21st century, female post is sexualized because they post sexy photos.

In the second episode of “Ways of Seeing,” John Berger mentions that women these days are still being materialized on social media by men. They are being seemed as sexual objects. Women have less control over their images in the media as the male gaze is determining them. Sexuality does play the same role in the ideas of women today, as Berger describes. The history of women getting sexualized can date back to the 1970s in Europe, where the nude paintings of women were objective by the male spectator. But the same subject of sexual pictures of women is viewed differently in another culture, superficially in Indian culture, as quoted by Berger. “Nakedness is a celebration of active loves between two people, and the women are as active as the men.”

Women’s equality has made a considerable impact, and it is still an ongoing movement.

Today, women are still objectified in much the same way that Berger described them. They are often viewed as objects of pleasure & satisfaction. Women on social media promote unremarkable body standards, like the woman in the video mentions, that the nude paintings describe an unrecognizable and exaggerated body for the pleasure of men and are not retable to most women in general. Women are portrayed in these paintings as submissive to men and for them to display their dominance.
Compared to the women in European paintings, women in social media have more control over their images since they are able to choose what they want to share. Despite this, women tend to be influenced by the male gaze as there is an expectation that a woman should act in a certain way to appear attractive to men.
Berner asserted that being naked means seeing oneself naked in their own skin, while nude means displaying a naked body, which does not always show the woman’s unique attributes, but rather is meant for the pleasure of men. The woman mentions a book, in which a girl was told not to touch her own breasts, to close her mouth completely, or to put her legs together as a sign of availability.

Social media such as integrals or even photograph pages have the same representations described by Berger. It all depends on the other’s people point of view and how they want to interpret the picture or painting they are looking at. Women today have more control of their image in the media. Technology has developed a fundamental advantage in which women have self-control and choose what they want to paint themselves as. They are in control of how they show their image. During the Renaissance, women looked for a man to paint them how they want them to. For example, Berger talked about nude paintings of women depicting the way of women views their images in a certain society. Even though women have more self-respect, they sometimes do objectify themselves in similar ways as what Berger argues about women depicted in Renaissance paintings “Naked is to be oneself and to be nude is to be seen naked by others and yet not recognized for oneself”. When Berger talks about the representations of women sexualize and objectifies, he is correct because women are painted and photographed in ways to please men. In society, today women are often objectified and forced to live up to unrealistic beauty standards various media use the female body and these standards to appeal to certain audiences which include mainly men. The idea of being seen nude is harmful because it perpetuates the idea that women are nothing more than their bodies and are here only to please men.

In both society and the media, women, and men are treated differently. For a man to have a presence, he must imply power, but for a woman, her behavior reveals her attitude toward herself and her willingness or unwillingness to accept certain things. As a woman, in my native country, I was born within a designated and limited space, into the hands of men. Until today, visual and social media, magazines, or advertisements of women selling products, generally refer to male voyeurism, which tends to sexualize women for a male viewer.

Women are defined by the spectacle, whereas men are discernible by their gaze. However, the nakedness of women in painting or advertisement is never an expression of their desires, but rather a submission to the spectator. Also, Berger points out that this is a uniquely Western cultural concept; whereas, in other cultures, sexuality has to do with partnered couples in which the woman and the man are both active.

Blog post #2 Ways Of Seeing

Women today are still being objectified by men especially on social media. when we post on these social media sites it’s usually for entertainment or to post a picture we thought we looked nice in, a simple comment can change the way that we view ourselves. The comments today are not only coming from men but women also. We have to deal with trying to fit in to the “now’ or the thoughts on how these commenters are viewing us. On episode two of Ways Of Seeing John Berger talked about the awareness of being seen by the spectator “they are not naked as they are they are naked as you see them”. If a woman wanted to post a picture at a beach in a bathing suit the viewer might see this picture as sexual rather than just a day at the beach. That goes to show that even after years woman are still being judged as they were in the past we just have more control now.
