Week 6

Hi all,

Next week we will begin the “Ways of Hearing” unit of the course. Here’s what I would like you to do:

Don’t forget to finalize your revisions of Paper #1. I will grade whatever version of the paper is in the Google Drive folder by Tuesday

Blog Post #4 & individual meetings

Hi all,

I have posted an official prompt on the course site for what I described to you yesterday regarding Blog post # 4. Make your post as soon as you can to take advantage of this opportunity for me to give you notes on your paper.

Your main task over the next week is to finish your paper.

I have also created a spreadsheet for you to sign up for meetings with me. As a reminder, we will not be meeting as a big group next week (April 5th). Instead, I will meet with you individually over Zoom to talk about your papers. ***Note: there are times available for Tuesday, April 5th, the day the paper is due. If you sign up for this time slot you will need to complete your paper by Monday, April 4th. If you sign up for this day and I don’t have your paper I will ask you to reschedule.

I’m attaching a sample paper from a previous semester to this email. This should help move your thinking about what you want to write about.

Let me know if you have any questions

Out sick, class canceled

Dear Students,

I am sick today, and unfortunately I need to cancel our class meeting today.

I would like you to use this opportunity to catch up on any blog posts that you might be missing. I will finish grading your posts from my sickbed. Please have blog post #1 and blog post #2 finished today.

You can see what you need to do before our meeting next week by referring to the syllabus. I’m pasting the items on schedule this week below.

I also want to remind you about my virtual office hours on Thursday. At 4:30, I will be there if there is anyone who has questions about the first paper. (I’m doing it this way, because I think it would benefit people who have questions about the paper to have those questions addressed as a group.)

I really hate to have to cancel today. Do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

All best,

PF

Blog post help?

Hi all,

I’m looking forward to our discussion tomorrow.

I see that only one of you has posted to the course blog, and I wanted to check in to see if anyone needed help with the technology. Also, you can find the prompt by going to the course site. It is also linked on the syllabus under week I.  Keep in mind that blog posts are graded assignments.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Reminder: Email addresses, etc.

Hi all,

I meant to send around a sheet of paper for your preferred email addresses (the ones you actually use). Would you mind typing the email address you want me to use in this Google spreadsheet

Also, please be sure to register for the CUNY Academic Commons, and email me your username. (pfess@lagcc.cuny.edu) I will send you an invitation to the site (which you will have to then “accept” through your LaGuardia email).

Doing this will enable you to complete the work this week. Which is:

Welcome!

Hi all,

Welcome to ENG 101!

I can’t wait to dive into the material I have planned for the course and read your work.

I will be giving you a full introduction of the course at our first meeting on Tuesday, when I will make Blackboard available and show you how the digital aspect of the course will work. However, we will not be using Blackboard for anything but as a way for you to check your grades.

For now, I would like you to sign up for the CUNY Academic Commons. Our course site on this platform will be where you will find readings and assignments, and it will be the place we interact for the online portion of the course. You can register for an account here. You will need to use your LaGuardia email address (your @live.lagcc.cuny.edu account). If you don’t have access to this email account you should contact the IT department by filling out this form. Once you register for the Commons, you will receive a confirmation email in your LaGuardia email inbox.

Here is the link to the course site https://eng101sp22.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

I look forward to meeting you all on Tuesday!
