Blog post help?

Hi all,

I’m looking forward to our discussion tomorrow.

I see that only one of you has posted to the course blog, and I wanted to check in to see if anyone needed help with the technology. Also, you can find the prompt by going to the course site. It is also linked on the syllabus under week I.  Keep in mind that blog posts are graded assignments.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Reminder: Email addresses, etc.

Hi all,

I meant to send around a sheet of paper for your preferred email addresses (the ones you actually use). Would you mind typing the email address you want me to use in this Google spreadsheet

Also, please be sure to register for the CUNY Academic Commons, and email me your username. (pfess@lagcc.cuny.edu) I will send you an invitation to the site (which you will have to then “accept” through your LaGuardia email).

Doing this will enable you to complete the work this week. Which is:

Blog Post #2

Think of examples that are closer to our time period. Do representations of women today, for example on Instagram or other social media, objectify them in the same or similar ways as those that Berger describes in Ways of Seeing, episode 2? Do women have more or less control over their images in the media or are they still determined by the male gaze? Does sexuality play the same role in images of women today as what Berger describes in the episode? (As you think about your answer think of specific places in the episode to respond to, and try to use techniques from They Say/I Say to formulate your response. In other words, use Berger’s analysis as a “they say.”)

Blog Post #1

Please write a brief blog post that responds to the two questions below. Remember to also respond to at least one classmate:

  1. According to Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, writers should use the model of “entering the conversation” in their writing. What are the advantages of this model?
  2. The smarthistory videos on the schedule this week discuss how learning to look at artwork helps us analyze other situations. Do you agree or disagree? Why?

Welcome!

Hi all,

Welcome to ENG 101!

I can’t wait to dive into the material I have planned for the course and read your work.

I will be giving you a full introduction of the course at our first meeting on Tuesday, when I will make Blackboard available and show you how the digital aspect of the course will work. However, we will not be using Blackboard for anything but as a way for you to check your grades.

For now, I would like you to sign up for the CUNY Academic Commons. Our course site on this platform will be where you will find readings and assignments, and it will be the place we interact for the online portion of the course. You can register for an account here. You will need to use your LaGuardia email address (your @live.lagcc.cuny.edu account). If you don’t have access to this email account you should contact the IT department by filling out this form. Once you register for the Commons, you will receive a confirmation email in your LaGuardia email inbox.

Here is the link to the course site https://eng101sp22.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

I look forward to meeting you all on Tuesday!
